Cash in the Cache – A Case Study

THE CHALLENGE

A nationwide Managed Service (MSP) and Broadband Internet Service Provider (ISP) required an audit of legacy IP networks after years of M&A activity, resulting in transitional IP record loss, assignment data erosion and an excess of IP resources. While they recognized an overhaul was imperative, they lacked bandwidth for the required data mining. Internal resources needed to remain focused on running the current network, ensuring ongoing customer satisfaction and adding new services.

THE OPPORTUNITY

This project presented a two-fold opportunity: Enhance network hygiene and security by restoring IP integrity. Tap into revenue potential for the client by identifying surplus IP blocks for resale in a market with growing demand for this finite resource.

OUR SOLUTION

The project’s discovery phase involved developing complex network scanning queries to identify real-time IP status on the production network. Relevant source data was extracted to validate active equipment and customer services against configuration management databases (CMDB). Nettxio engineers collaborated with the client to label, compartmentalize and prioritize the IP reassignment strategy based on the customer, service type and quantity of IP addresses in scope. This began the phased approach of targeting the still-in-use end-user customer network IP ranges and assigning new IP ranges for the migration. Once new IP addresses were assigned, our team streamlined processes with our client’s sales, engineering, project and account management teams to coordinate end-user communication and migration strategies to minimize disruptions, while migrating as many services as quickly as possible.

EFFECTIVE COORDINATION of multiple client support resources, database administrators, account representatives, engineering support representatives and field tech resources.

To facilitate RAPID MARKET ENTRY amidst potential price fluctuations, less complex IP blocks were prioritized for analyzation to ensure swift deployment.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY, Nettxio collaborated closely with the clients and end-user resources coordinating changes only when necessary. A proactive, targeted approach minimized disruptions, fostered trust and transparency and ensured completion within schedule.

Prioritized RECORD-KEEPING & FUTURE-PROOFING by meticulously recording IP range assignments in an IP Address Management (IPAM) System, ensuring easy tracking and reference. The documentation simplified logistics and laid a solid foundation for future decisions.
